Kalidou Koulibaly, aka KK (K2), Signs for Chelsea: A Perfect Rudiger Replacement?

Experienced defender finally moving to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea Football Club of England are on the verge of confirming the signing of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly on a £34 million deal. The 31year old defender had already completed his medical in London and will be announced by Chelsea once all the documentation is done and he becomes an official Chelsea player. This is according to the transfer tsar Fabrizio Romano. He will be Chelsea’s second signing of the Todd Boehly era after the signing of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City in a deal worth £47.5 million.

Kalidou Koulibaly is seen by many as a fantastic signing for Chelsea. The 31year old is capable of playing with both feet, can defend, and is imposing in both boxes. Furthermore, he is a leader, captaining his club Napoli and his national team the Teranga Lions of Senegal. Earlier this year, Koulibaly led his national team to their first AFCON triumph – a historic feat after many years of heartbreaks.

Some, however, have reservations because Koulibaly is coming from the Italian Serie A and may have challenges with the pace of the league in the English Premiership coupled with the fact he is 31years of age. Yet many believe this point would not bother him as Thiago Silva who came from another league considered lower in status to the Premiership has adapted very well so far. In addition, his experience and knowledge of the game will help him to adapt the same way Thiago Silva has adapted beautifully.

This signing ticks the boxes for Chelsea who lost their stalwart in defence in the person of Antonio Rudiger after the German moved to the Champions League winners Real Madrid at the end of last season. The club also lost Andreas Christensen to Barcelona. But it is in replacing Rudiger that this signing makes lots of sense as that position of LCB has been an area of concern since the German left. With the experience and technicality of Koulibaly, experts believe Chelsea have found their man to perfectly replace Rudiger.

With the possible signings of Presnel Kimpembe from PSG to join the veteran Thiago Silva and Academy revelation last season Trevor Chalobah, as well as the presence of the Academy prospect Levi Colwill, it is believed the Chelsea backline which had looked suspect a few weeks ago after Rudiger and Christensen left, now seems back on track and rearing to dominate the EPL and the UCL respectively.

Whether Captain Caesar Azpilicueta leaves for Barca or not, Chelsea feel the gaping hole left by Rudiger’s departure has been effectively filled. Is Kalidou Koulibaly the perfect replacement for Rudiger? We will find out in less than a month when the new season begins!
